August 7, 2001 Minnesota spot #1 East of Pine City(private land)
This spot is in the middle of a private 200 acre parcel. There are lots of big trees and thick as all get out. Private land surrounds this property that includes swamp with waste high water (I have been told), a high ridge a mile away where 8 bears were harvested a year ago (so I have been told). There is a lot of competition in this area but I feel I have a good chance. I believe in my bait and if I can get their every other day I should be able to harvest a bear in this spot. Man is this area thick!

I am so disappointed. I got to the spot to bait for the first time and found that one of the sons decided to build a home on top of my bait site. I am devastated. I left after talking with the son for an hour. He may have some other land for me to hunt on but he needs to get the access. Here we go again!

August 11, 2001
I met with the son again and he couldn't get the access for me. Surprise! It turns out that he has 80 acres that is landlocked. The only access is through a swamp. My little Toyota does it again. I was driving through cattails taller that my truck. I was driving blind but I made it across the swamp. Hopefully the swamp will stay dry or I am going to be in for it. I found a good spot but I am not sure if I am on the right property or not. I am pretty sure but you never know. Ofcourse I forgot my liquid smoke and I am out of fish. I hope the bears can smell the donuts by themselves. We will see.

It was raining hard when I left my truck. I couldn't drive as close as I would have liked but I didn't want to take a chance and get stuck in the swamp with my two wheel drive truck. I loaded the 50 pound pack of bait on my backpack and started to half mile trek to the spot. I must be out of my mind traveling this far. I was soaked to the bone long before I got to the bait site. The spot was hit hard. This is the spot where I have big rocks holding down the logs. The rocks and logs were pushed far away from the bait and the bait was almost gone. This spot is looking real good. It might be my opener spot. I baited the spot up, covered it again with the logs and rocks and put my attractant of liquid smoke out. I can't wait until this weekend to see if it gets hit again!

Raining once again! Why is it every time I am baiting it rains. I hope that isn't a negative sign. I carried over 200 pounds of donuts and corn to my bait. That and carrying my treestand and climbing stick made for a long day. The spot was hit again and I can't wait until opener. I talked with the neighboring landowner and it turns out there are two bowhunters not one as I thought baiting on his property. Those two with the eight hunters on the ridge makes a total of eleven baits in area including mine. Do I have a chance? We will see.

I carried just one 40 pound bag to my site. I figured there was enough bait there. I am really disappointed because my site wasn't hit the last two days. This was my only spot that was worth hunting at this point. I can't give up hope now and pray I am wrong. You see, I put out so much bait that a bear wouldn't have to move the logs or rocks to eat. Maybe that was a mistake. We will see day after tomorrow.

There isn't any indication that this spot was hit. Since it is the opener I decided to sit anyway. You never know! I have so much bait at the spot the bears don't have to move the logs to get at alot of the donuts. That is the only way to know for sure you have a bear. That and bear droppings or tracks which don't exist hear that I can see. I got skunked literally. That's all I saw was one big skunk. Those who plan on filming your hunts remember that some camera's automatically turn off after a certain amount of time. My camera timed out after around an hour and fifteen minutes. Waving your hand in front of it may reset the timeout. I will try it next time and let you know. I hope this spot picks up soon!

August 25, 2001
I baited today. I didn't see any reason to hunt if the spots aren't being hit. Donuts were gone but I don't know if it was a bear. Again, the logs weren't moved. I will come back in a couple of days. Maybe the berries will run out soon and the weather will cool down.

August 28, 2001
I hunted this spot for the second time. The spot is starting to look real good. Logs and big rocks were thrown everywhere. I didn't see anything. I just need to be consistant and I know I will be successful.

Sorry I haven't been better at updating these logs of my hunts. Hunting takes up a lot of time. I keep hunting this spot and still haven't seen a bear. This spot is hot. I should try hunting it in the morning. I don't know if I will get a chance to. My last day to hunt is this Sunday!

Unfortunately my bear hunting days are over for this year. There is always next year. This spot didn't produce a bear but it should have. I am guessing it was nocturnal. They do that sometimes. See you next year!
